Today SJSU students are turning in their movies and the equpment they borrowed to make their productions. There is a line outside here at Clark Hall. This is one of our most fun events at SJSU.
Within a short walk of San Jose State University is a special place, Downtown Yoga Shala. Shala, a “sacred space” in Sanskrit, is just that. It is a wonderful yoga studio that has made a big difference in my life. Located at 450 S. 1st Street the Shala is in San Jose's blossoming South First Art (SoFA) District and is surrounded by art galleries.
On June 26, 2009 the Shala had a Candlelight Yoga Class taught by Jeff Lang featuring live music. Girish played wonderful music and the result was unlike anything I have ever seen or photographed. Veronica Cruz, a good friend and the owner of the Shala did a great job setting up this event!

On Saturday March 21 we had a help desk party at Saby Thai in San Jose. Ruchi Binjola and others at the help desk put together an excellent party for help desk and former help desk staff. We celebrated the recent marriages of several of our help desk couples. It was a great party!

This is one of the photos that will be in the show my son Kenneth and I are doing on the Darrough Brothers, Jack and Bill Darrough. The photo of Southern Pacific C-8 class 2-8-0 Consolidation 2740 was taken by Bill Darrough in Bakersfield, California on November 30, 1937.
This show is a follow up on the Bill Darrough show that ran at Winterail 2007. If you want to see the 2007 show, a version is here!

Ruchi Binjola's birthday was a cause of celebration at our help desk. We have a great staff almost all of whom are thousands of miles from home. So, we try to create a small bit of home here at the help desk.

Adobe was not at this years MacWorld and Apple will not be at the next. If MacWorld survives the loss of these anchors the best part will hopefully remain. My favorite part of MacWorld are the displays around the edge and in the obscure corners of MacWorld. That is where you find passionate developers like Jessie Youngblood and Steven Abbagnaro of Tooble. These are the folks who have the new ideas and the fresh products the ones you don't read about on the A-list blogs or in the trades. Tooble is a cool product and will meet a need I have to use YouTube Videos in classroom presentations.

According to a press release from Apple:
Apple today announced that this year is the last year the company will exhibit at Macworld Expo.
SJSU has a huge community of Indian students. They are very far from home. They have their own unique perspectives on the recent terrorist attacks in India. Some may like to be able to share their perspectives with friends and family, both here and back home.
I have booked Clark Hall 116 at SJSU on Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. for an open mike podcast recorded conversation to discuss SJSU student perspectives on the Mumbai attacks.
This is the result of a request by an Indian student to provide an Internet forum for, "inputs on this recent terrorist attack and aftermath."
Of course, the podcast will be put on the Internet. SJSU Journalism students have also been invited. Other interested members of the campus community are also invited.

The Staff Fee Waiver Program allows employees to take classes at SJSU at a reduced cost. The classes may be to improve current job skills or to get a degree for career development. The fee waiver benefit may be transferred to an employee’s dependent, allowing a spouse to get a degree or providing a child with the college experience. This course explains the types of fee waiver available to staff, why and how an employee may participate, how a dependent may participate, and how managers can use the program to encourage and train their employees.

In April 2008 Reuters was purchased by The Thomson Corporation and it is now Thomson Reuters. The old Reuters opened the first news bureau in Second Life, Thomson Reuters is still in Second Life, reporting on news in this other world.
In Wednesday's class we will view the Reuters video as well as the DVD Second Life: A Documentary by Anders von Reis Crooks [View Trailer]. The class blog assignment for next week will be to comment on the video and look at trends in our real world as well as technology trends and share your personal vision of where you think this all is going.

Jacob turns one this week and we celebrated on Saturday. He is such a cute and happy baby. It was a lot of fun. It was very nice of Nicole's mom Kathy to host the party at her house. It was a big party and she had a real house full.

[From the User Group] Suzette Allen is quickly gaining recognition as one of the leading instructors of digital imaging, teaching others how to master the tools of Photoshop. Suzette has helped many photographers survive the Digital Dive with her beginning and intermediate level Photoshop classes, "Digital Discoveries".
Suzette has been a professional portrait photographer for 21 years, but has become a dynamic instructor of digital imaging and now spends half of her time traveling and teaching all over the US and abroad. She is currently the "photoshop expert" on ShootSmarter.com, a resource site dedicated to helping photographers.
We'll have pizza and drinks at 6:30, and the meeting will start at 7:00, in the Park Conference Room of Adobe Systems' East Tower, 321 Park Avenue, San Jose. To park underneath the Adobe building, use the Almaden Avenue entrance, under the East Tower. If the security guard at the parking entrance asks for an Adobe contact, use Bryan O'Neil Hughes's name. Academic Technology Expo
Today Thursday, April 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 is the Academic Technology Expo to be held in the Academic Success Center in Clark Hall. The Expo features innovative pedagogies and technologies for teaching, assessment and collaboration. Faculty and students will be showcasing their projects. iPod Shuffles and USB keys drawings will be held every 30 minutes. Light refreshments will be served.

Next week we are going to have a very special guest speaker in my Wednesday night class. Brian Baer, the political photographer from The Sacramento Bee, will be speaking to the class. Brian is a hot shooter. In my opinion, he has one of the keenest eyes I know of.
He is a friend and a great guy. He is an alum of our photojournalism program and is passionate about photojournalism. He has seen the transition from conventional analog to digital photojournalism. This should be a real treat! You are invited to bring friends, especially recommended for folks interested in photojournalism.
An added bonus is the inside view Brian has of California politics. This should be a great session!
I ran into Brian Baer when I was shooting the CA democratic convention on March 28-30.
It was the first time I had seen Brian for over ten years and we immediately caught up on old times. Feel free to spread the word. It is a large room!

Last day at CA Convention marked by great speeches
I came to this convention a relative neophyte to the processes and the personalities of the Democratic Party in California. I have been strongly motivated by what I have seen happening to our university system. Earlier this month I was in Sacramento lobbying state senate and assembly members on behalf of the university system I love. But, I was speaking out of passion for education rather than knowledge of politics. I still have a lot to learn, but I have started to get an understanding of why it is so important for us to be involved and how we can be involved. Of course the presidential election has us very focused on that right now. Today President Clinton and San Francisco District Attorney, Kamela Harris each gave great speeches in support of Hillary and Obama. I had a great seat and took many photos:

SJSU Budget Forum April 2
Faculty, staff, students and administrators, mark your calendars. An important forum for the San Jose State University community on the state budget crisis will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the Student Union, Barrett Ballroom. Boxed lunches will be provided by the campus union groups. Please RSVP at 408-924-7787 by Wednesday, March 26.
The forum is a collaborative effort between President Don W. Kassing, campus labor groups, the Academic Senate and Associated Students. Members of the campus community are encouraged to attend to get the facts about the budget crisis and to learn how we can take action to let lawmakers know the importance of the California State University and the education we provide to students.
Speakers include President Kassing and representatives of faculty, staff, students, alumni and labor groups. The SJSU budget forum is one of a series of similar events being held on each CSU campus.
