Beware of Gretting Cards

Beware of fake greeting cards
"It is just the latest trick for attackers to get users to install malicious software on their machines," said Zulfikar Ramzana, a Senior Principal Researcher in the Advanced Threat Research Group at Symantec.

"This is one of the worst attacks we've seen in years," said Adam Swidler, a senior manager with the Internet security company Postini. "The bottom line here is if you get a note saying you have an e-greeting card and to click a link to open it... whatever you do, don't."

According to Mike Wendland, of The Detroit Free Press's Online edition named Freep, "Instead of a greeting, the link leads to what is known as the Storm Worm, a powerful snippet of code that installs on the unsuspecting user's computer and then begins to send out spam to everyone on the user's contact list."

According to Washington Post technology writer Brian Krebs, "Previous e-greeting card scams harbored their viral payload in an infected e-mail attachment, but fraudsters now are simply embedding links in the fake card messages."

Krebs said, "The nasty greeting cards have been traced back to tens of thousands of machines infected with the Storm Worm, without a doubt, 2007's most prolific and successful e-mail worm. Storm and its flurry of poisoned e-greeting cards are responsible for one of the biggest virus outbreaks in recent history."

Krebs said, "Microsoft Windows users would be well-advised to simply delete any e-greeting cards that land in their inboxes."

Shifted Gears

Joe and Steve at a union meeting

A weekend of shifted gears
On Friday I went to a union meeting in San Francisco. I had some spare time in the morning so I was able to stop at a couple of camera stores on the way. After the union meeting Susie took the train up to the city and we went to dinner at Kuletos in union square. On Saturday we spent most of the day working on our garage. I took a break for my mountain bike ride where I got the flat. On Sunday we returned to doing garage work and then in the afternoon I went for another bike ride. We have been on the go so much that work that needed to be done was not getting done. The bike rides were short, but fun. We have been on the go for several weekends in a row, this weekend we had to do stuff at home. Sometimes you just have to shift gears!

New Mac Models Next Week?

New iMac Models, Keyboard Models and iLife Version Coming?
According to AppleInsider, Apple has called a meeting this coming Tuesday at its Cupertino campus, "Apple Inc. is gathering analysts and members of the media for a Mac-related press event to be held at the company's headquarters in Cupertino on Tuesday, August 7th, AppleInsider has been told."

Apple insider said, "Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is widely expected to use the gathering to take the wraps off a new generation of 20- and 24-inch iMacs, which were first detailed back in March and later pinpointed for a release in late-July/early-August. It was also reported by AppleInsider in recent weeks that each new iMac would come bundled with a new super-slim keyboard, photos of which subsequently turned up on the web. Jobs is also more than likely to use Tuesday's event to provide demonstrations of the company's long-awaited iLife '08 and iWork '08 software suites."
